Mission of the WSF
As an
artistic company, the Webster Shakespeare Festival is founded on the following
ideas
 |
To explore the
works of William Shakespeare; making them more accessible by identifying in
them themes and issues relevant to the world we live in today. Additionally,
the WSF strives to present those works in ways that are innovative, creative,
unique, thought provoking, culturally diverse, and entertaining. |
 |
To explore works
from the modern era by artists who, in the tradition of Shakespeare, present
the same questions of human existence and meaning. |
 | To
achieve a level of financial sustainability that would enable us to strenghten
our organization, present quality theatre, and operate in a fiscally
responsible manner |
We
live in a modern world that is ever increasing in it's lack of intimacy, it's
faceless, voiceless communication, and at times, it's dwindling humanity. At the
heart of his writings, William Shakespeare is concerned with what it means to be
human. How is our humanity and existence called into question by conflict
with that which surrounds us? These external forces include political
climates, familial obligation, war, friendships, and God, to name a few.
Shakespeare explores what happens to our humanity when these forces are
juxtaposed against the qualities that make us human: thoughts, emotions,
morality, beliefs, and of course, our capacity to love.
It
is the exploration of that conflict that forces us to examine ourselves and the
world around us. By doing so, we risk coming away with even more questions. But
we also may find the means to re-connect on a human level. Perhaps we may even
find answers to modern day problems within ourselves and each other.

Goals of the WSF
It is
the goal of the Webster Shakespeare Festival to enrich the cultural life of
Webster residents and surrounding communities in the following ways:
 |
Performers and
artists in Webster and the surrounding area will have an opportunity to
challenge themselves and grow artistically |
 |
Webster residents
and visitors will have an opportunity to see theatrical work that they may not
otherwise see, thereby expanding their cultural and intellectual horizons |
 |
The festival will
create a sense of pride, rallying the community around a common artistic goal |
 |
In the future,
theatre students in the Webster community, as well as other suburban and city
communities, will have a chance to partake in a multitude of exciting
educational theatrical opportunities |
 |
The festival will
be a driving force in growing Webster’s artistic community, putting Webster’s
cultural life on the same level as Webster’s reputation for sports excellence |
 |
Residents and
visitors will have another reason to come to the Main Street/North Ave. area,
thereby supporting local business. |
